Dr. Ramon Benavides
2022 Texas Teacher of the Year
I am an accomplished Science Educator with a versatile work profile. Passionate about serving youth with socioeconomic backgrounds and institutional barriers similar to those I encountered growing up on the Border in South Texas. I am genuinely committed to bringing together my love for science and my commitment to inspiring today’s youth.
My story begins with my amazing parents. Ramon Sr. and Gloria were migrant farmworkers who dropped out of school at a young age, only to return and become educators in South Texas. I have followed in their footsteps and entered the education profession. For the last 12 years, I have taught in the Ysleta Independent School District at Del Valle High School in El Paso, TX. I hold multiple degrees – a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and Master of Arts in teaching science in biology from the University of Texas at El Paso. My wife and I are completing his doctorate from Texas Tech University in education leadership and policy.
Since my first step into the classroom, I have taught high school biology. Throughout the years, this has expanded into AP biology and dual-enrollment biology. Also, I am a part-time biology adjunct instructor at El Paso Community College. My passion for education and serving my students is not limited to the classroom. I sponsor the school’s anime, medical sciences, and environmental stewardship clubs.
Additionally, he oversees a new chapter of Del Valle High School Science National Honor Society. I am a member of several professional organizations and have two publications. During his summers, he usually participates in Research Experiences for Teachers, which has allowed him to conduct scientific research with Rice University from 2017-2019 and the University of Texas at El Paso in 2015 and 2021.
I approach my profession based on recognizing that all students learn successfully when they comprehend a connection between the course material and the core knowledge gained from all experiences. My mission is to encourage students to explore the “bigger picture” of what they learn, to “connect the dots,” and arrive at their conclusions that their education is a fantastic framework of facts and endless possibilities. As an educator, I believe it is essential for all students to interpret education not as random facts contained in a book or vocalized in a lecture but as a structure of concepts on which life thrives on.
The ultimate goal is to create as many opportunities as possible for students in every position I serve. From being a biology teacher to a club sponsor, all I do is for my kids. The objective is never to be satisfied with who he is as a teacher. Teaching is my passion, and the classroom is my refuge, but I acknowledge that all that I do would not be possible without the love and support of my wife (Alyssa) and sons (Trey and Roddy).
